In the North-West of Spain you can find Vigo, an attractive seaport and the largest fishing port of Europe. Amongst the many well-known fishing ports in the Netherlands there is Scheveningen, the place where Hans Roeleveld started his career.
Each week, together with his father, brothers and sisters, he used to sell fish, bought at the Scheveningen fish auction in Zwijndrecht. In 1975 the family opened a shop at the Scheveningen harbour. It developed into a wholesaler and fish smoke-house. In 2012 Hans opened his first own fish shop and fish restaurant in the Gentsestraat at the Belgisch, together with his sons Cor and Jonathan. And their own business suited them well. So much that they further expanded their family company. The modern sea-food bar at the Aert van der Goesstraat, named after the Spanish fishing port is the second fish restaurant of the Roeleveld family. Hans and his son got more focussed on the catering side of the business.
Fresh fish has been the most important factor and this still remains so. Fish caught in the morning and on the table the same day. This is how Hans and his sons want to be distinguished from other fish businesses. The line from buying to serving has become shorter. Added to this came the pampering of the customer at lunch and dinner. Seafood bar Vigo fits in well on the Aert van der Goessstraat , with its many places to eat. The idea is to go for some nice food after shopping. Fresh fish caught “around the corner” and served in a Spanish atmosphere seems to be a hit with the shoppers. What would be the next enterprise of Hans, Cor and Jonathan ( and the next generations)?
