Over fifty years ago, around 1965, the brothers Jan en Kees founded the poultry shop “Gebroeders Ammerlaan”. Seven years after the opening Peter Gleijm entered the firm. He was already an experienced poulterer. For over thirty years he worked together with the brothers. In 2005 he took over the shop, together with his wife Susan. They kept the name “Gebroeders Ammerlaan”. In 2015 Peter and his customers celebrated the fortieth anniversary of the business.
Peter has modernized the shop. Quality and service stay at the fore front just as it was with the brothers. The chickens are still carved by hand and almost all products are home made. Game and fowl are still the core of the assortment. But Peter is looking beyond the horizon, because times are changing. In the Statenkwartier the number of expats is growing explosively and he has been anticipating this. French people in the neighbourhood regularly ask for French products, like fowl from France with the Label Rouge certification: free range with access to open air runs. Anyway organic products are now very popular. He also supplies catering branches, e.g. the beach tents in Scheveningen.
And “Gebroeders Ammerlaan” is carrying on the tradition of being a family run firm: Peter and Susan’s sons are ready to take over the business in a couple of years. The shop could not have been in a better spot: the Aert van der Goesstraat with all its restaurants, cafés and shops selling food and groceries. The demand for traditional products is growing. People like to know what they eat and increasingly buy organic, sustainable products. This promises a happy future, also for further generations!
